St. Francis, the Saint from Assisi

Happens that hard works becomes an opportunity to develop a method which then marks a way of operating for everyone.

Thanks to the request for a philological reproduction of the habit that belonged to Saint Francis, we got in touch directly with the “La colombina” weaving mill of Badoere which supplied itself with raw yarn from the Lanificio Paoletti, and in this way we were able to use the Saint’s habit follow the entire production chain.

Once the fabric was obtained, Francesco analyzed and reproduced the cut of the original habit, and this is how a true philological copy of the original dress was created, faithfully reproduced in all its characteristics, even in the missing parts.

The habit will be on display until January 7, 2024, alongside the costumes from the film “San Francesco” by Zeffirelli, belonging to the Cerratelli foundation, and some rich original vestments, as well as works ranging from Caravaggio to the Gentileschi, from the Middle Ages to the present day .

Exhibition of historical costumes by Atelier Pietro Longhi, made by Francesco Briggi and curated by Raffaele Dessì

Info and reservations on www.pietrolonghi.com

The exhibition “Fashion Stories” will show for the first time all the social classes that lived in the Serenissima, thanks to cross-sections of the carnivals over the centuries. The propensity of the Scuola Grande to welcome representatives of all social classes, with a large presence of women, a very rare reality in the past, inspired the birth of an exhibition that was not limited in its description only to the high classes, usually in the center of the studies given the quantity of documents and the speed with which the shapes of the clothes changed.

The prestigious venue, unique in its kind and preciousness, the summa of Venetian Baroque architecture and art opens its doors to Francesco Briggi tailor of the Atelier Pietro Longhi, who made all the clothes with their accessories, and to Dr. Raffaele Dessì who oversaw the entire exhibition in terms of contents and set-up, allowing the creation of the exhibition “Fashion Stories – Carnival tales”. This exhibition tells the story of Venice through one of the most important characteristics of its material culture: clothing and the materials connected to it.

In 20 costumes, faithfully reproduced by Francesco Briggi from original documents or taken from paintings by the most important Venetian painters, it is shown how much trade first and then manufacturing art, linked to fashion, were the fundamental engine for the development and affirmation of the Venetian myth from the Middle Ages to the mid-1700s, up to the present day with excellences that are exported from the lagoon all over the world.

Three periods were examined: the early Renaissance, with the representatives of the “compagnie di calza” (stocking companies), followed by a section of the early 1600s, ending with a section dedicated to the famous Venetian Carnival of 1700, the engine of the rebirth in the ‘ 80 of the last century.

A selection of costumes that represent almost four hundred years of Venetian traditions, tales and stories, to be enjoyed together with the beauty of the Scuola Grande dei Carmini.

Vivaldi’s documentary at Museum of Palazzo Grimani

21st febbraio
Museo di Palazzo Grimani, castello 4858
First show 3pm, second show 5pm
Costi: price 12€ reduced 2€
Please note: the show will be in Italian language, no subtitles.

Vivaldi’s music embodies three of the fundamental ingredients of the Italian style: imagination, emotion and temperament. For this reason the Venetian composer is now known all over the world; his music is played everywhere, from elevators to opera stages, as adapted to techno and rock concerts as performed by purist ensembles. Vivaldi is acclaimed everywhere as the “pop star” of classical music, yet the man behind the scores is still an enigma. Little is known about his life, but in recent years more and more documents have emerged that shed light on his personal history.

For the first time, a documentary, broadcast on German and French television in prime time with millions of viewers, analyzed the life of the mysterious “red priest”. The film shows how he managed to make his way from Venetian theaters to the wealthy European aristocracy, playing for the Pope and the Emperor, describing his rapid rise and abrupt fall that ended in Vienna. Venice, the protagonist of the documentary as the muse of the great musician, is the background of the journey through time of the opulent European Baroque, a look at the genius personality. A story of sheet music and intrigue of the first “Rockstar” in the history of music.

Eike Schmitz – director: founder of Atlantis-film is a documentary maker who has been producing and directing documentaries distributed on the German national network and various national European networks for over thirty years. From the most powerful rulers of all time to the most famous swindlers, passing through architects, musicians and explorers, there is no story worth telling that Eike has not deepened and transformed into a journey through time and in the places where they really are. events have happened. Nature and history are its distinctive note, perfection and culture its characteristic feature.

Raffaele Dessì – Consultant: thanks to his preparation that ranges from music to art, from philosophy to science, moved by a boundless curiosity and a culture in continuous formation, for years he has been offering consultancy for the production of cultural events, careful reinterpretation of documentary screenplays, preparation of film sets. Now in his third experience with Atlantis film, which is in addition to those with National Geographic, Arté Francia, Rai Storia, Canale 5, he is now engaged in drafting a text on the evolution of Venetian architecture in its staterooms.

Francesco Briggi – costume designer: On November 26, 1994 Francesco began his adventure in the world of costumes by opening the Pietro Longhi Atelier. Over twenty-five years of satisfaction, fear and sharing with the thousands of customers and friends who from all over the world encourage him to continue in this splendid adventure by exporting Francesco’s creations to the stages of national theaters, palaces and public and private collections. Years of study and continuous maturation, during which the innate taste was flanked by increasingly refined tailoring techniques and the rediscovery of a cut forgotten for centuries recovered not only with patience, but also with the innate ability to adapt history to the body today. The research on the cut is flanked by that on the materials, which are usually of Italian production and often artisanal and precious, thus combining the tailoring study with the safeguarding of the territorial specificities that Francesco must recreate.

Palazzo Grimani confirms itself as a place of dialogue between different forms of art and in particular for the encounter with ancient Venetian music and its protagonists. Musical patrons and theater builders, the Grimani were among the protagonists of the Venetian panorama also in the eighteenth century, with the figures of Giovanni Carlo and his son Michele. The palace used to host performances and shows and therefore the melodies of famous composers resounded even then in its halls.

Venicessence

There is no better way to celebrate Venice’s birthday than to remember the great innovations and projects that were born in the lagoon.

We provided the costumes for some videos shot for Bottega Cini and The Merchant of Venice  about the great Venetian perfumers.

The history of perfume and spices in Europe is inextricably linked to Venice, and as often happened in the city, women were protagonists and entrepreneurs who developed projects whose repercussions we can see till today. The first protagonist is Maria Agyros, granddaughter of the emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire and then a Byzantine princess, who brought the use of perfume to Venice. The second Isabella Cortese, the first who took care to create real beauty creams and perfumes, mother of modern cosmetics, and finally Caterina Gennari, who, distilling grappa in the city, gave her nephew the idea to make the first cologne , ancestor of all modern perfumes.

Three short videos, with texts edited and read by Pieralvise Zorzi, directed by Tommaso Giusto for Veneta Video, with costumes and accessories made by Francesco Briggi.

Romeo’s and Giulietta Fashion

The cultural projects about the history of fashion by Atelier Pietro Longhi continues. Following the request of the cultural association Giulietta e Romeo, of Montecchio Maggiore, we recorded three short clips that explain the fashion in late XVth century in an accessible way, to be showed during a live event that involved both actors and different performers,

Thanks to the collaboration with Tommaso Giusto of Veneta Video, three short interventions were born, shot inside the atelier structures, which showed not only where a costumes are made, but also the study and care behind them.

Streaming Carnival!

Carnival 2021  was very strange. For safety reasons, carnival could not be held in Piazza San Marco, but we all needed joy and lightheartedness. So, since most of the activities were already traveling on the internet, Vela made a courageous decision: to create a digital schedule that would allow all Venice Carnival lovers to experience the most awaited party of the year!

To Atelier Pietro Longhi was asked to create fashion stories that reflected the spirit of the carnival, and so we found ourselves telling our “fashion stories” in a light way. Paying attention to respect the spirit of each era, but at the same time saving the Venetian carnival and opening the space that hosted it, Ca ‘Vedramin Calergi.

Francesco Briggi was almost every day in the studio and told live anecdotes and participated with his proactive and ironic spirit, in the creation of memorable moments, combining culture and sartorial skills with entertainment!

On our Instagram you can find all the clips in the album history in evidence: Carnevale 2021!

A precious collaboration

After the 1966 flooding the American community founded an association that had as its goal the recovery of funds to restore works of art of the martyred city.

Once the emergency was over, the foundation decided to carry out other restoration projects, widening the number of members to all lovers of Venice, adopting works of art that needed urgent maintenance and restoration, to bring them back to life thanks to the spontaneous commitment of supporters.

This year there was a new “Acqua Granda”, a fooding. Like 53 years ago, on November 13th, Venice woke up on its knees. Many historic buildings damaged, most of the city’s artisan realities unable to continue their work.

You can imagine with how much pride we announce that, on the proposal of the Foundation, a part of the rental of the carnival costumes for the associates, will be devolved to the Foundation that will use them for interventions in Venice.

Atelier Pietro Longhi, always attentive to Venetian know-how and culture, is therefore happy to announce this precious collaboration, because by saving the intangible asset “Carnival”, it will contribute to the rebirth of Venetian material goods that build  the dreams of people all over the world.
